EAST COAST
Montclair, New Jersey enacted a comprehensive, year-round ban on the use of gas-powered leaf blowers. The ordinance restricts the use of these devices due to their noise and pollution. A legal challenge against the ban by landscaping companies was unsuccessful, with a federal court ruling in favor of the township in late 2024.

Washington, DC
On December, 26, 2018, the Washington, DC, City Council unanimously passed and Mayor Bowser signed Bill 22-234, which mandated a shift throughout the District away from noisy, hyper-polluting gas-powered leaf blowers, and to modern, clean battery-powered models, over the next three years. The full ban started on January 1, 2022.

Connecticut
Westport, CT prohibits the use of handheld and backpack gas-powered leaf blowers between May 15 and October 15 of each year, effective as of May 15, 2024. Passed in January 2023, this ordinance aims to protect environmental quality and health, while encouraging the switch to quieter electric alternatives.

Greenwich, CT amended their noise ban to include gas-powered leaf blowers: Noise Ordinance
Maryland
Effective July 1, 2025, Montgomery County, Maryland, baned the use of all gas-powered leaf blowers and vacuums (handheld, backpack, and walk-behind) to reduce noise and pollution. The ordinance, passed in 2023, also prohibits the sale of these devices and includes a $500 fine for violations. Rebates are available for electric equipment.
